Zimbabwe’s Wetlands and the Ramsar Convention

Zimbabwe is home to a number of wetlands of international significance, many of which are designated as Ramsar Sites. The government continues to prioritize the sustainable management of these important ecosystems, recognizing their value not only for biodiversity but also for the socioeconomic well-being of local communities. The country is committed to upholding the principles of the Ramsar Convention, which aligns with Vision 2030’s goals of environmental sustainability, socio-economic development, and climate resilience.

By integrating wetland conservation into national policies such as the NDS1, Zimbabwe is ensuring that its wetland ecosystems are protected for future generations while contributing to its national development objectives. The government’s commitment to Vision 2030 and the Ramsar Convention will pave the way for the effective management of wetlands, supporting both environmental health and the livelihoods of the people who depend on these vital ecosystems.

Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 recognizes wetlands as crucial natural resources that contribute to the nation’s sustainable development. Through the National Development Strategy 1, the country is making tangible strides in protecting and managing its wetlands, reaffirming its commitment to international frameworks such as the Ramsar Convention, and ensuring a greener, more prosperous future for all Zimbabweans.
